To design and build a prototype of a plastic bottle shredder to increase the income for wastepickers in Brazil
Project:
In this class, there were teams of 3-4 students that worked on different design challenges with community partners in different countries. Waste pickers, known as catadores in Brazil, earn a living collecting and selling recyclables from trash. Intermediaries then granulate the plastic bottles into flakes and sell them to industry which captures 75% of the value. A low-cost human-powered plastic chipper could help co-ops of catadores maximize their profits. Our challenge was to design and build a prototype of a plastic bottle shredder to increase income for wastepickers in Brazil.
