WAste Management and Recycling
Collaboration: D-Lab, Community Innovators Lab, traveled with Public Service Center Expedition Grant (https://giving.mit.edu/underclassmen-campaign/impact.html)
September 2010-May 2011
Goal:
To study the waste management and recycling system in multiple communities on Eastern coast of Nicaragua and develop a technology to help transport the recyclable materials.
Project:
For this project, I worked with the UN Development Program, a local Non-Governmental Organization, and 5 municipalities on the Eastern coast of Nicaragua, to create zero waste and recycling programs. I was part of a team of 7 students who worked on different aspects of the project. We conducted field research for two and a half weeks in Jan 2011. I studied technological innovations for waste management/recycling with a focus on building materials made from recycled plastic. I also traveled with the garbage and recycling collectors along their routes to have a better understanding of what their end of the process looked like. Upon returning to MIT, I spent the spring semester working with Chris Olmacher and Gwyn Jones and developing building materials from recycled bottles.
